Life at Gedong Ashram

This beautiful ashram is strategically situated between the ocean, a spring fed fresh water lagoon and at the foot of a mountain. The site was chosen by its founder, Ibu Gedong Oka,  and I can tell you the feel of the place is beautiful and inspiring. I have heard stories of Ibu since I have been here and she sounds like a similar character to my grandmother (who I adored) ..a community leader, a true matriarch in her family and someone who inspires others.

What is an ashram..I am learning it is the simple life. This particular one has a purpose to serve the local community and its members. It has a kindergarden on site, and there are also about 15 ashram members, some of who are teenagers and the ashram pays for their schooling. While in Lovina, a local told me that he has 4 children and its quite expensive to send them to school. It is a privilege here especially if the student can become proficient in English.

The ashram has a few avid gardeners growing everything from aloe vera and lemongrass to mangos, bananas and mandarins. And of course ..coconuts! Someone here has a serious love of orchids that my photos don’t do justice to.
